In January 2014, I was hired to be the online editor of Oxygen magazine, and I felt like I had found my tribe. I immediately fell in love with the fitness-minded staff members, who are so passionate about their work, producing the best fitness magazine for women. And now I’m excited to lead this magazine as the new editor-in-chief!
Some of you know me from my interactions with you online. But here’s a little bit more. I was always active as a kid — I played soccer, basketball (a hilarious challenge for my 4-foot-11-inch frame), ran track and swam competitively. However, when I picked up my first weight at age 16, my life changed forever. My dad had just joined a gym to lose some weight and lower his blood pressure, and I thought it would be fun to tag along. Thus, began a lifelong passion for weight training.
I didn’t really know what I was doing, so I went to the library and read magazines much like this one to learn about sets, reps, weight selection and exercise selection. That sparked another passion — magazines. I’ve spent most of my career as an editor, and even though I’ve drifted into other fields over the years, I always come back to what I love. Now being able to combine my two passions is a dream come true.
After years of training with weights, I decided to round out my regimen with yoga and quickly fell under its spell, as well. In 2012, I did my first yoga teacher training and earned my 200-hour certification. The following year, I completed my 500-hour certification. This year, I finally decided to pursue a personal training certification. I’ve realized that the more I know, the more I want to know. Broadening my education and gaining new perspectives is crucial.
That’s why as the fitness industry is constantly evolving, so are we. As science catches up with the benefits of keeping your body in motion (see “Get Your Sweat On,” Page 62), there’s a plethora of cutting-edge research on training and nutrition, and we will break it down for you each issue.
This issue we also spent time with cover girl Nicole Wilkins, three weeks before she returned to the Olympia stage, and we were in awe of her strength — physical and mental. And you’re going to love her fat-torching workout (see “Gunning for Gold,” Page 20).
We’re going to be making some changes over the next couple of months, and I want to hear your input. Together, with you and our amazing team, I look forward to taking Oxygen to the next level.
