This month I thought I’d write a standard December column explaining how to beat holiday stress, what to do to burn off the extra fruitcake, blah, blah, blah. But then I thought, these are Oxygen readers; they already know all this stuff! There’s no use stating the obvious.
Instead, I want to encourage you to think on a larger scale and pay your fitness forward. It’s the
season of giving, and there’s no greater gift than imparting your intimate knowledge of health and fitness to someone else. We all know a woman who’s struggling to lose weight, stick to a program or eat healthfully. It could be your mother-in-law, your aunt, your neighbor, even your daughter’s best friend, and now’s the ideal time to reach out and lend a hand.
With this in mind, we’ve put together a great issue with all kinds of pay-it-forward articles to share. Try making our 20-minute skillet suppers for a holiday dinner, teach your mother-in-law how to use dumbbells with our user-friendly quickie workout, and help your stressed-out pals unwind with our super zen yoga feature. Be patient and encouraging with your mentee, and answer all of her questions thoughtfully and thoroughly. You’re helping to guide her toward a healthier life, so make the journey enjoyable and achievable!
Once you’re done with this issue, take a look at the bigger picture and donate it to a library or a women’s shelter. Lend it to a buddy or give it to your kids’ school. Circulate it within your community and perpetuate its usefulness, and do your part to pay fitness forward.
Happiest of Holidays,
Lara McGlashan, MFA, CPT, Interim Editor-In-Chief
