Question of the Month:

Q. I’m going to a formal Christmas party and want to be nice and tanned in my strapless cocktail dress. I’m terrified of using self-tanners because of the streak factor, and don’t really want to use a tanning bed. What should I do?

Expert's Response

You’ve got two options: one is fairly inexpensive, but convenient and the other is pricier but a nice way to pamper yourself at a busy time of the year. I’d recommend both but it all depends which suits your needs.

Option 1: Sunless tanning booths

I’ve used sunless tanning booths – or “mystic tans” - three times in my life. The first time I simply wanted to try it, and see if it measured up to all the hype. The second was for my 30th birthday party, when I was the belle of the ball and wanted to look great. And the third time, I was asked to be a bridesmaid in a strapless, cornflower blue dress and, again, I wanted to look nice and tanned. Each time, though, I was nervous. Although I watched an instructional video, there’s something nerve wracking about stripping down, grabbing a shower cap, then getting into a booth where jets spray your entire body up and down with self-tanner. The process takes less than two-minutes, and once you get out of the booth and dry yourself off with towels, it’s a done deal. Four hours later, you’re magically bronzed. Every time I’ve tried it, I’ve been amazed by the results. And even though it lasts only a couple of days, it’s the most even, attractive tan. One thing to keep in mind: make sure to wear grubby clothes because the excess self-tanner rubs off on your clothes.

Option 2: Spa Self-Tanning Treatment

This treatment is going to run you about $60 plus, but it’s a wonderfully pampering treat for the winter. This is how it works: you go into a treatment room where an esthetician gives you a full-body, head-to-toe exfoliation. That way, your skin is silky smooth and absorbs the self-tanner better. Next, you’re escorted to a shower where you rinse off the exfoliant. Then, it’s back to the treatment room for a full body self-tanner application. Your bonus? Not only are you tanned, but the application process is like having a light massage. And you’re also guaranteed a streak-free, completely even tan.

But take it from me - no matter which option you choose, you’ll be glowing and radiant for your special occasion.
