Question of the Month:

I’m allergic to whey protein. Can you suggest other protein sources other than soy? I’m looking for examples of non-dairy snacks that I can eat during the day.

July Question

Great question. A lot of people have this type of allergy. If you’re searching for a supplement (like powder) there are plenty of products made from egg and egg whites that may work for you.

Casein, which accounts for 70 to 80 percent of milk’s protein, may also be a good option. Best to test which ones will work with your system and not cause bloating or discomfort.

Great snacks that are dairy/whey-free include:

• Almond butter in a celery stick
• Peanut butter on an apple
• Oatmeal mixed with water, or soy or rice milk with some berries and nuts on top
• 100% orange juice smoothie
• Hummus (made from crushed chickpeas – a great source of protein) on whole-wheat pita or whole-wheat crackers.
