What’s running through your
head when you’re running an
obstacle course?

“Prior to the race, I mentally run through the course. I actually look at my stop watch, hit start and mentally run myself under and over bars, up the cargo net, over the wall and across the finish line, and when I hit stop I can be within two seconds of my exact time. On race day I tune everybody else out and mentally picture exactly what I’m doing. I concentrate on doing my best and don’t worry about any of the other competitors. My only goal is to beat me own best time.”

“The feeling of going through an obstacle course is really intense. All that I’m thinking about it getting to the other side of the obstacle. I don’t think about my technique or form, I just think that I’ve got to get over this obstacle and on the to the next one as fast as I can. I always have this huge knot in my stomach at starting time and as soon as the gun goes off I can feel the adrenaline running through my blood. That’s what gets me through those obstacles as fast as I’m able. About four weeks out from a competition I run mental laps through the course. When I have a quiet time I close my eyes and watch myself at the starting line, head the gun go off and I go through the entire obstacle course perfectly. If I mentally mess up, I make myself open my eyes and go back to the beginning until I can run through the course four or five times perfectly in my head.”
