Although the risk of toxicity is low, the recommended upper limit for vitamin C is 2,000 milligrams for healthy adults; more than that could lead to GI issues such as cramps, nausea and diarrhea. While it’s almost impossible to go overboard with vitamin C by eating natural foods (you’d have to eat 11 cups of red pepper strips or guzzle an entire gallon of OJ), it’s pretty easy to do with megadose supplements.

Choose a product that provides no more than 60 to 120 milligrams of vitamin C a day to prevent digestive distress.
