If you’re anything like us, doing the same old workouts in the same old scenery gets pretty old. Especially if you work at home, things can get a little monotonous. Getting active outdoors can help solve that problem, but in many parts of the U.S., it’s getting more frigid by the day. The cold and snow may be less convenient than summer sunshine, but with the right outdoor gear, winter weather doesn’t mean you can’t still venture outside to sweat out your cabin fever.

The thing about training or just spending time outdoors in the cold is you need to be prepared for it. Having the right gear can mean the difference between an uneventful day and a miserable (or even dangerous) one.

Here, we round up some of our favorite outdoor gear for when temperatures are low but your motivation is high.

Oxygen’s Outdoor Gear Picks

1. Fjallraven Abisko Trekking Tights

These tights were built to survive — and keep you comfy — through the toughest outdoor activities you can dream up. From the wide waistband with an adjustable drawstring to the plethora of pockets to hold all your stuff, these pants were made for trekking. The reinforced knees and rear ensure you won’t tear these tights or get soaked as you kneel or sit on damp, rocky terrain.

2. Oiselle Lux Mile One Pullover

Choosing base layers can be tricky. You want something that’s easy to layer, soft, cozy and breathable to build upon whether you’re heading for a run, hiking or even hitting the slopes. The Mile One Pullover from Oiselle is all of the above, and it’s more than cute enough to wear alone once it’s time to shed those layers and grab a cup of hot cocoa at your destination. With a slightly cropped cut and mock neck to keep the chill out, this top will be your new go-to — trust us.

3. Adidas Terrex Free Hiker Gore-Tex Running Shoes

adidas Terrex Free Hiker

When training in cold weather, there may be nothing worse than suffering through a pair of wet socks. The Adidas Terrex Free Hikers were made to avoid this tragedy, thanks to a waterproof yet breathable Gore-Tex upper membrane. Adidas’ Boost technology puts some spring in your step on long runs and hikes with a responsive midsole, and the Primeknit uppers comfortably hug your feet to provide stability. Continental rubber soles provide grip no matter the weather or terrain.

Alright, so a foam roller won’t keep you warm on a chilly run. But if there were ever a recovery tool to have on hand year-round, it’s this. If you’re like us, working out in the cold leaves your muscles feeling tighter than usual, so once you’re warmed back up, it’s not a bad idea to roll out and do some mobility work.
