Question: I know I should eat after I work out, but I’m not hungry. What should I do?

A lot of people can’t stomach the idea of eating right after working out, which is scientifically understandable. Research shows that longer or more intense bouts of exercise can slow digestion and suppress the release of ghrelin, a hunger-inducing hormone, while increasing the release of peptide YY, a hunger-quashing hormone. Postworkout nutrition is extremely important, however, so if you just can’t face a plate of solid food, prioritize hydration by drinking water or an electrolyte beverage. If you’re a little more tolerant, have a carb- and protein-rich drink or smoothie, taking a few sips right away and drinking the rest within 90 minutes.
