Winter’s over but we’re still in hibernation mode. How do you motivate yourself to get back on track after months of darkness, comfort food and cozy, cover-up sweaters?

Spring is all about rebirth and renewal, and with that comes a recommitment to your goals. If you didn’t do it in January, this is the perfect time to push that reset button — get rid of the dust, rust, clutter and excuses, wipe that slate clean and start your spring training program today. Here are my top tips for putting the spring back into your step — and your workouts.

Assess the Situation

As unappealing as it may be, hop on that scale, weigh yourself and set a goal to aim for. Whether you want to lose a certain number of pounds or convert body fat to lean muscle, this will help you put a game plan in place. Next, get rid of all the big, baggy clothes you hide underneath during the winter and hang your sundresses and swimsuits in the front of your closet so they become your focus.

Wipe Your Calendar Clean

Do you live and die by your calendar? Then honor that planning technique by prioritizing the things that matter. Say no to things that no longer serve you, and say yes to things that will help you achieve your fitness goals. If you’re worried about fitting everything and everyone into your jampacked schedule, multitask: Plan sweat sessions with your friends instead of going to happy hour, or ask your significant other to take an after-dinner walk instead of watching Netflix and chilling.

Try Something New

I love trying a new class or fitness video to keep things fresh, and nothing is more motivating than a new workout outfit or fun pair of shoes. Also, think about how germy your mat might be from various yoga studio floors and how many sticky things are living on the bottom of your gym bag — maybe it’s time to treat yourself to a new one!

Purge the Pantry

As the snow melts, say goodbye to the hot cocoa and pasta that comforted your shivering winter soul. Visit a farmers market and stock up on fruits and vegetables, and enjoy eating as green and as clean as you can. Make sun tea, fresh smoothies and colorful plates of food. Produce gives you more energy so you won’t need to rely as much on caffeine.

Music is an essential component to any workout. Compose several new playlists that will pump you up, or download some fresh, new songs that motivate you to move. You also can go to to download my favorite spring-spired playlist!
